Independent Hemodialysis Program

The Providence Health Care Renal Program offers the option of training patients to carry out hemodialysis at home. Dialysis at home can be done more often or for longer periods of time and as a result, patients get a greater dose of treatment over the course of a week. Training usually takes between 6 and 8 weeks and and occurs in the North Shore Community Dialysis Unit or Richmond Community Dialysis Unit.

After patients have finished their training, arrangements will be made to modify the patient's home to accommodate a hemodialysis machine so that patients can dialyze independently at home. If patients do not have suitable housing, they can perform "nocturnal independent dialysis" in a hospital dialysis unit. Home and in-centre nocturnal patients are supported by monthly clinics visits and regular home visits.
